Why a flatbed carrier would look at bulk
Most people reading this page are not going to buy a hopper bottom. The ones it is for already have one, or are thinking about it, or run a fleet where half the trucks pull a deck and the other half pull something else.
The argument for a second trailer is seasonal, not romantic. Open deck freight tracks construction and manufacturing, so it thins out in a hard winter and a soft building market. Bulk tracks agriculture — harvest and spring fertilizer — which is a different curve entirely. Carriers who run both are hedging one against the other.
