Looking at 2016 Peterbilt with a 500hp Paccar. Wondering if they are worth it and what kind of fuel mileage they get.

How far from home are you going with this truck?

Pretty much all over, but mostly in the mid west.

Paccar motors are fine if you run in a close region so you know what you have for support. Parts and tech. Running a Cummins is like a Chevy back in the day. Everyone has parts and most mechanics have at least some knowledge. There are a lot of areas where Paccar parts aren't going to exist.

I have a 15 KW with that engine ,heavy haul, grossing 140000 lbs . Love it. Will out pull an ISX in the hills with about 20% betterm fuel economy. A couple of caveats though. You definitely want extended warranty as parts can be pricey. Get any work done at a dealer . Only problem I've had has been injectors plugging with biofuel blends but running an injector cleaner seems to solve the problem.

Thanks for the reply Andy, that what the dealer said about the warranty also. Just wondering what your fuel economy is pulling that weight. Thanks

we ran some mx motors in 2015 and had no trouble except one had a bad wiring harness on the exhaust system , once they finally figgered that one out they ran fine , the one thing i would not reccomend though is if you run in much offroad conditions stay away from the hyd. clutch sytem , that did give us plenty of trouble. but the engines seemed to be fine.

HOW MUCH GROSS WEIGHT? HOW LONG IS YOUR RIG? HOW MUCH DISTANCE FROM BACK OF CAB TO TRAILER? MOST OF THE HOPPERS IN THE US ARE 42 MAYBE 45 FOOT RUNNING THE INTERSTATE HIGHWAYS AT 80,000 POUNDS LEGAL GROSS WEIGHT. ARE THE 2013 OR 2014 PACARS ANY GOOD OR SHOULD A PERSON STAY CLEAR OF THEM

Gross weight 140000 Tare 39000 Rig is 90 ft long. 210 wheelbase on tractor. back of cab to trailer is 48 inches with open end trailers, 30 inches wi closed end . I mostly pull open end steel side Doptker or LoadKing trailers . The dopkers are the same weight or lighter than wilsons or Timpte but about 20 grand cheaper . up here you will never make that up in fuel savings or resale value.
Stay away from 13 or older MX s. 14 s are ok only if they have high pressure fuel rails 15 and up are fine.

What is an easy way to tell the difference between high & low Pressure by looking at the engine???
I think someone said you can tell by which fuel filter it has,
Is there another way to tell ???
Thanks.
