Trailer title on abandoned trailer

Hello, I have a trailer that was left at my business for 10 years by an old friend of mine. He recently passed. I have put money into this trailer and would like to be able to get a title for it but I don't know the legal steps to do so. Anyone have any experience or know the law on what i need to do in order to legally tag and title this trailer? Any input would be appreciated. Thank you.

Dustin I dealt messed up titles for many years, I might be able to help as our laws are similar to your state laws

In Oklahoma we use the title 42 process. If you can show where you had an agreement for storage payments to be made and none were, once the storage charges reach and exceed the value you of the item you can put a lien on it and effectively take ownership in lieu of payment. I hope that helps.

Upon further investigation, it looks like a bond cannot be used to obtain titles on abandoned vehicles in Illinois. Sorry about the above link.

I dont know if this could work.. Your friend left his trailer at your business AKA stored it there.. And never paid the storage bill??? So maybe a mechanics lein??? Just a thought.. Maybe its a good time to talk to an attorney... I know many places have whats called LAWYER REFURAL SERVICE.. its in the phone book.. Call them.. Tell them what you need an attorney for.. They will reconmend one.. You call up the attorney. And because you went through lawyer refural.. They will give you X ammount of time for a big discounted rate.... Just a thought.. Good luck.. Jeff

Find out who is administering the estate (will) of the deceased. They may be able to help you out

Go to the DMV right where you live. They will tell you the current law for your particular state. Asking for opinions here is a waste of time-always go to the people that really know, not those that are guessing??
