Set-Up or Processing Fee for Carriers to "Register" with Broker or Dispatch Service?:

Two separate carriers (one does bulk the other does not) told us that they have had brokers and dispatchers charge a "set-up" or "processing" fee anywhere from $25-$50, to do background checks, credit checks, etc. in order to be on their list and in their network of carriers- Has anyone here done or heard of this?

I'm a broker and I can't even process this. All the information that we need for setup we get from the FMCSA, Carrier 411 to check for double brokering reports, and the carrier themself. 411 is like $100 a month, everything else is free. The only thing I could see is it a way to keep the double broker carriers away or make them pay for wasting our time constnatly but I've always looked at that as just part of the deal.

I will admit, as an idea to try and get those fake carriers to stop calling, this may be something... but I would never consider charging a legitimate carrier a setup fee. No surprise we hear about this as soon as freight starts to tighten up though... 6 months ago when you couldn't beg for a truck I bet you this BS wasn't happening.

Calling all shippers

We do carrier setups for you, match your freight with our carriers system and pay the carriers same day we get the paperwork from them. 3 in one package that benifits you and the carrier for a lot less than the typical broker fees. dont need to worry about dealing with the carrier for loads or having carriers interupting your accounting department for pay as we can do that for you.

Speaking of Carrier 411, is the info there nothing more than we can get for free from FMCSA's website and/or other platforms with a bit of research? I am asking this genuinely, not as critism or anything. I signed up for their 30 day free trial about a year or so ago and just about halfway thru that trial period I was suddenly not able to log into my acct- When I contacted them I was told they figured I had already had enough time to see if it was for me or not and if I wanted to continue I needed to upgrade right then; Because of this, I did not...

It's the best tool that we have to deal with poor acting carriers and double brokers - there are networks of "carriers" and "brokers" that illegally and unknowingly to those of us who are legit that will take loads acting as a carrier and then broker them to a different broker or carrier. This leaves a brokered load uninsured which is a massive liability, often leads to unauthorized crossdocks and transloads, which leads to damage and also conditional or even OOS carriers that are actually pulling the freight. It's a huge problem, I get calls every single day from these losers. If you're a broker go and look up in your system if you've worked with any L.A. or Glendale/North Hollywood carriers in the last few years. I'd put $100 bill they have double brokering reports on 411 or at least have all the indicators that will indicate to us that they are. Shoot me a message or an email and I'll check a couple MC's for you to show what I mean. There's a few patterns that we have found to identify these guys that I can divulge in private that is a sure indicator on the FMCSA info but the ability to review reports is huge.

I will also say I don't live and die by all 411 reports as some reports are very petty, but any indication of re-brokering is 100% a no, and there are more than just the CA guys doing it.

We are a dispatching company and we never charge our carriers a setup fee that is crazy. You are using us as your dispatch service why should I charge a setup fee. Thats just crazy to me.

We use this to set up our carriers. We DO NOT charge anything for this nor does Bulk Loads that I am aware of.

Another Bulkloader called me a little while ago. I know what they will think of next. He got an email today offering a service to do all of your carrier packets for the low price of $100 per month... Just when you think you've heard it all..UNBELIEVABLE
