Looking at buying a T680 with a Paccar MX13 450hp engine, 2.79 gear ratio , 12 speed automatic transmission. 230 wheel base, 76 inch sleeper Pulling 80 000lbs mostly interstate, want to know what is the average fuel economy people are seeing with similar setups.

I have the same engine but with a manual and a different gear ratio. I can hit 6 and 1/2 on a good day, but the wind seems to massively impact that. It's also insanely weak at climbing hills.

What year? There are a fair share of us in the bulk community that would say the MPG would be 0 as it will never leave the shop if it is 2023 or newer. Prior to that I have heard good things. |

I agree with Robert, but view it differently. The fuel cost per day is amazing on the Paccar engines. Fill you tanks and it'll last a good two or three months while it sits in the shop. There is a reason trucks with paccars are as cheap as expired meat at wal-mart, constant fuel system issues, constant aftertreatment failures, then you add the tow bill because only Pete or KW dealer can make repairs, two weeks to get diagnosise at most locations, then a week or two waiting for parts and final repair. Then the unease of waiting for the next failure to happen. |

We run a 2020 T680 with very similar specs. Agreed, it doesn’t like hills when loaded. Set the cruise on 70-72 and we see 6.5-6.8mpg. Hang out in the high 60s mph and we see 7.2 plus. I saw 8mpg on some flat parts of I-80.

Anthony, you get a gold star for explaining the complexities of heavy truck resale.
Your last part "unease of waiting for the next failure" can have massive consequences. when it comes to driver retention. You can only tell a driver so many times "it is a new truck" as it continues to breakdown before they leave or you have to buy another truck. Then of course you need to trade in expired walmart meat on a better truck and take a whoppin. |

Robert, There are currently multible class action suits againt Paccar over these motors. Unfortunantly for Dart the Minnesota court just upheld Paccar's limited warranty denial of consequential damages. That means that even though you lost your butt on these trucks you can't persue damages for lost time. Fortunantly for me I'm in Louisiana and we have different laws. I have 10-2023s with Paccar motors. We'll see how our suit plays out here. |

Any Paccar above 500,000 is a ticking time bomb. Make it to 700,000 without a rebuild, count your lucky stars. That's why they're cheap. Then JX Peterbilt says $80k for a rebuild (or a long block, same $) that gets you a lousy 60 day warranty. That motor, along with any Navistar 13 liter and the old D16 Volvo are Owner Operator killers. If you're just one truck, Detroit DD13 or DD15 and their aftertreatment systems are the most dependable. Note they are not perfect, but the equipment and the availability of dealers is the best available. I put over 1.5 million on a DD15 with no rebuild; now over 420 k on a DD13 and so far so good. A couple issues that warranty covered and cost a half a day on 2 occasions. Manual Trans in both, both 7- 7.5 mpg pulling a 102 by 84 Timpte. A Paccar won't run that long or get that mpg pulling hopper. Truck Country/Stoops have many shops open 16 hrs a day during the week and a least Saturday until 3 and never kept me down for long on either motor. My home base dealer is open 18 hrs a day during the week and 12 hrs a day Saturday and Sunday. They have taken in the truck Friday afternoon and had me ready to go by Sunday night numerous times over the years. If you're in Fyda territory you're screwed though. Bad, slow service served with a screw you attitude. Wasted thousands with them. Tow it West to a Stoops. Dealer service is stupid expensive. But if I go to a cheaper non dealer shop to save a couple grand (good people but slower; under manned and no second shift) but lose a week of revenue (typically $5 to $7k) the cheaper shop isn't cheaper. The pre emissions Cat group seem to have a good reputation and no aftertreatment crap to deal with, but I have no experience with them so you'll have to check with someone that runs that way. |

2015 t680 paccar mx13, 13 speed manual. At 65mph, I see 7mpg, at 72mph 6.7mpg. Rear axle is just a tag axle.plenty of power, but had all those breakdown issues, "fixed". It's a beast now. |

We are looking at a 2022 Paccar with 290k miles on it with a 2 year 250 000 mile warranty(Engine,Transmission and Aftreatment). We want to replace our entire fleet with lighter more fuel efficient trucks that we will spec brand new from the factory. Looking at buying this one to test it before we order 5 new units in the fall of this year. Thank you for everyones advice, I appreciate it! |

I'm a Cummins guy. I have friends (two brothers) that had 444 hp / 855 cu. mechanical Cummins in the late 1980s, early 1990s. They each exceeded a million miles before an overhaul. My last new truck was a 2005 with Cummins ISX 565 hp. It went 1,400,000 miles before an overhaul. That's progress. Today trucks cost twice as much, and last half as long. That's criminal. Goberment policies to "save the planet". A global economy. OEMs playing right along. Engines are built to meet emission standards with inferior material. Throw away products. Think of the waste of raw materials used to manufacture throw away products. Some of todays trucks get astounding fuel mileage. Others get crap. Someone explain how today's clean burning trucks getting crap fuel mileage are any better (ultimately for the environment) than older technology getting very good fuel mileage. WE ARE GETTING SCREWED! |

Get 12.7 detroit. Keeps running. 500 hp. Out runs the paccar. Still gets in 7s with a belt trailer. You can fix it yourself. |
