Hey question for anyone running a set up with an extra lift axle. What are pros and cons between having the 3rd axle on the tractor or on the trailer. Specifically looking at opinions on a grain hopper. Currently running spread axles but maybe wanting to go from 85,500 to 90,000. If the axle is on the trailer what are the thoughts about it being a steerable axle to ease strain on axle components while turning? Thanks for the opinions |

I’ve been messing around more with running over 80,000 up here in Minnesota, and figured I’d share a few things we’ve learned so far. Our overweight laws are pretty restrictive, so it’s not as straightforward as just adding an axle and hauling more. First question — is it even worth it?On paper it sounds great, but when you actually break it down, the numbers get tighter than you’d think. If you’re already running 85,500 and bump up to 90,000, you’re only gaining about 4,500 lbs. After you factor in the extra weight of the axle (figure ~1,500 lbs), you’re really netting around 3,000 lbs… about 1.5 tons. At $250/ton, that’s roughly $375 extra per week if you can use it on every load. The problem is—you won’t. And when you can’t, that extra axle is just dead weight costing you payload. We figured you’ve got to be able to use that axle on at least ~40% of your loads just to break even, and that’s before maintenance. Not everything can (or will) load heavyBig one we learned the hard way—you can’t assume just because you can haul it, someone will load it. In Minnesota, some commodities qualify, some don’t. On top of that, certain counties and routes won’t allow it, and some shippers just won’t mess with overweight at all. So now you’ve got equipment built for something you can’t always use. Pusher vs trailer axleWe’ve tried both approaches:
Bridge law will bite youThis is where a lot of setups fall apart. Trying to make bridge with shorter trailers + pushers can be a headache. Even when it should work, you end up fighting axle weights depending on how it gets loaded—and we all know most loaders aren’t thinking about how you want it balanced. Dispatch gets more complicatedOnce you start mixing equipment, you’ve got to stay on top of it. We’re now running:
It works, but dispatch has to be intentional or you’re leaving money on the table. Don’t forget what else you haulThis was a big one for us. We run liquid too, and in Minnesota you can’t go over 80,000 with it. So now you’ve got trucks with pushers that are actually hurting you on those loads because of the extra tare weight. My takeIf you’re already at 85,500, I don’t think jumping to 90,000 is a slam dunk. If you’ve got dedicated lanes where you can use it all the time, then yeah—it can make sense. But if you’re bouncing around like most of us, it adds complexity, cost, and weight that you’re not always getting paid for. Honestly, being really intentional with specs and where you run might get you just as far without adding axles. Curious what others are seeing in states that are a little more friendly on overweight. |

With a triple axle you want to be more mindful of how sharp you are turning, especially in tight u turn situations. I'm not sure any company is installing stearable on triples, I know they do on quad axles

With a triple axle you want to be more mindful of how sharp you are turning, especially in tight u turn situations. I'm not sure any company is installing stearable on triples, I know they do on quad axles
