Are Increased Weight Limits the Biggest Opportunity for Bulk Trucking?

Over the last few weeks, I've noticed more discussion, news articles, and conversations coming out of Washington, D.C. regarding truck size and weight regulations. As I've followed these developments, it's caused me to reflect on a topic that's been on my heart for more than two decades in the bulk freight industry.

Whether this legislation ultimately moves forward or not, I believe it's an important conversation for our industry to have. The reason is simple: I've always been interested in finding practical ways to help carriers, farmers, and rural communities become more efficient and more prosperous.

That brings me to a question I've been asking for over 20 years...

How do we make trucking more efficient and profitable for carriers?

We all know there are things we can't control. We can't control freight markets, seasonality, fuel prices, weather, or economic cycles. Rates go up and down. That's part of the business.

But what are the things we can control?

One area I've always believed deserves serious attention is increasing truck weight limits.

I know this topic can spark debate, and I respect both sides of the argument. But when you look at the data and the real-world examples, increased weight limits allow carriers to haul more payload per trip, improve efficiency, generate more revenue per load, and reduce costs throughout the supply chain.

I've seen it firsthand in states that allow higher weights. I've also seen it in Canada, where many bulk carriers operate at higher weight limits and run extremely efficient and successful operations. You can often see it in the quality of their equipment, their profitability, and their ability to reinvest back into their businesses.

Earlier this spring, I was invited to speak at the National Grain and Feed Association conference. Before that trip, I prayed and simply asked God to use me however He saw fit. One of the key points I shared was that increasing truck weight limits may be one of the fastest ways to create meaningful efficiency gains for agriculture and bulk transportation.

Since then, I've had discussions with industry leaders, members of Congress, and representatives within FMCSA. I'll also be traveling to Washington, D.C. later this year to continue those conversations. It's been encouraging to see this topic gain momentum and become part of a larger conversation about the future of transportation and agriculture.

It's also worth asking why increased weight limits have faced resistance over the years. One of the biggest opponents has traditionally been the railroad industry. That's understandable. Every additional ton a truck can legally haul makes trucking more competitive for certain freight movements.

But what if we're looking at this the wrong way?

What if this isn't about trucking versus rail?

What if increased weight limits create benefits across the entire supply chain?

Think about the farmer trying to get grain to market. Think about the feed mill buying ingredients. Think about the shipper trying to stay competitive in a global marketplace. Think about the carrier trying to survive on tight margins.

If a truck can safely haul more product in a single trip, transportation costs can be reduced, efficiency can improve, and more dollars can remain in the hands of the people producing and moving America's commodities.

For farmers, lower transportation costs can help make their grain and products more competitive. For carriers, it can mean more revenue per trip and better utilization of equipment. For agribusinesses and consumers, it can create a more efficient and cost-effective supply chain.

To me, this isn't a zero-sum game where one side wins and another loses. The real opportunity is creating a more efficient system that benefits farmers, truckers, agribusinesses, consumers, and rural America as a whole.

At the heart of this discussion is something much bigger than weight limits.

For years, I've been passionate about helping small-town rural America thrive. I've spent most of my career working alongside farmers, truckers, grain companies, and small business owners. I've seen the challenges they face and how hard they work just to make a living.

I often talk about diversification and the importance of creating multiple revenue streams because I believe that's one of the best ways to build stability. But the reality is that many carriers don't have the ability, capital, or desire to start another business. They simply want to make a better living with the trucks they already own.

That's why this issue resonates with me.

What if we could help carriers increase revenue per truck? What if we could help them move more product with the same driver, the same truck, and the same hours? What if we could create efficiencies that allow family-owned operations to become more profitable without having to add more equipment, more debt, or more overhead?

My heart in supporting this isn't political, and it's certainly not personal. It's about looking for practical ways to strengthen rural America, support family businesses, and create more opportunity for the people who keep our agricultural economy moving every day.

If there is a safe and responsible way to help carriers haul more, earn more, and become more sustainable for the long term, then I believe it's a conversation worth having.

I've also heard concerns about road wear, bridge infrastructure, and equipment costs. Those concerns are valid and deserve consideration. But after studying both sides of the issue and listening to people far smarter than me, I believe there is a path forward that balances safety while improving efficiency.

Do I think increased weight limits are the answer to every challenge facing trucking? No.

But I do believe it's one of the most practical opportunities available to help carriers move more freight, improve profitability, reduce supply chain costs, and strengthen American agriculture.

Most importantly, I'm not advocating for this for my benefit. I'm advocating because I believe it could create long-term value for the BulkLoads community and the bulk freight industry we all care about.

I'd genuinely like to hear your thoughts.

I've never liked having to haul heavy to make the rpm needed to make a profit Finally I quit and only started hauling for shippers who would pay decent rates Hauling heavier net weights, rates will never increase That is what is needed...rates in ag trucking to increase, at least with grain

Hey Gabe,

Thank you for replying and for your feedback. I totally agree, we have to get rates better for carriers. That's a big part of my mission.

One constraint that many grain merchandisers and commodity traders will attest to is that they're constantly evaluating all modes of transportation and choosing the most favorable option available. Generally speaking, barge is the most efficient, followed by rail, and then truck. Of course, not every load can move end-to-end by barge or rail, and nearly all of those shipments still start and end with a truck somewhere in the supply chain.

My point is that allowing heavier weights can help trucks become more competitive with rail on certain lanes that you might not normally think of. That's one of the biggest lessons I learned during my days at Bartlett Grain. When trucking can move more product per trip, it creates efficiencies that can help keep more freight on trucks and potentially improve opportunities for carriers.

Hopefully that makes sense.

If loads would pay better, they'd get more moved. Instead, putting more stress on your vehicle. And wearing out the roads worn than what they are. That'll hard to drive on already 10 4

We've been hauling 50 tons here in Michigan forever. It's my experience that the efficiency of moving twice the payload is a no brainer. Less trucks, less fuel.less drivers, less smoke...can't see the downside. Reach out if you want to talk about it, I've been at it for 48 years.

Jared , Good topic We are a New England carrier, we run 99,000 pound gross loads , average 30-32 payloads all the construction , fuel , gasoline, in MA and RI on 5 axles , NH,ME,VT, must have 6 axles CT is 80,000 NY is heavy as well Take into consideration, our trailers are much heavier, 25 30 thousand pound axles Our tractors, 46 and 48 thousand pound rears Insurance is obviously higher , I find it hard to compete fir CT,NJ,PA loads because my tare weights are heavier Are region has always run these weights , are drivers are trained from the git go to handle the weight For the rest of the country to convert to heavier weights would render their equipment useless The rates would just find an equilibrium and the shippers and receivers would benefit, the carriers just have to spend more I’m with you bulk rates have to be higher , I’m not against the rest of the country hauling big loads legally , I just don’t see it ever happening To upgrade the nations fleet would be a huge investment, that the carriers would have to bear alone Jus’Say’n

Moving from 5 axles to 6, and from 80,000 to 91,000 makes sense from an overall efficiency standpoint. One can even argue it would benefit the U.S from a national security standpoint as well. But, from a carrier point of view, it's doing the same work with higher input costs, and the potential that your business could be eliminated do to less demand for trucks.

We have favorable overweight permits here in NY. Any standard spec truck can easily gross 90,000+ lbs on 5 axles, with the right triaxle trailer you are at 107,000 lbs, and quads can get you 117,000 I believe. Still toll increase, and slight mpg decrease, but when you have a decent rate per ton, the money rolls in. Any bulk company staying in state has to get on board with that to compete. Rates need to be by the ton to make it worthwhile. If you are used to flat rate, you need to change the way you think about bulk.

I'm with you on not hauling heavy. I see no reason too. They heavier they are allowed to load me, the harder it is on my little truck and my trailer. With 1.3 million miles on the truck, and her not being a big, heavy truck, I don't feel like loading super heavy every time and stressing her. In my mind, there's no real good reason too.

I ran 6 axles for a number of years, and have dropped back to 5 the last couple. Running locally I see that it makes no difference as to how many axles you have, they all load as much as their trailer will hold. I see closed tandem’s crossing the scales at 100,000, and 6 axle setups blanking out the scales. So if they can legally run 90,000, how heavy will they be now? Instead of increasing weight limits, let’s enforce what is already there. AND, for those New England and Michigan trucks that brag about their weight, your highways SUCK!! Just like Colorado where you can run 40,000 on tandems. The roads DON’T hold up!!

I’m not for it because….

  1. Will the rates increase to cover the extra expense of upgrading equipment and additional costs associated with operating a six axle setup, remain the same rates and you just make a little more money because of the extra weight you haul, or will whomever is paying the freight expect the rates to go down because you can haul more and expect the same rate per mile? My guess is that a rate decrease will be on the horizon.
  2. Cost to switch from a five-axle to a six-axle set up. One two ways to get there. Strech the truck and add a drop axle or upgrade to a three-axle trailer. By the time you add the extra weight of either setup how much are you gaining in net weight? The trade in value of a tandem axle trailer will drop because no one will want a tandem axle trailer.
  3. Some facilities lack the ability to be able to accommodate longer setups. Are they willing or even have the ability to make updates to accommodate the longer setups.
  4. The folks the choose not to upgrade are placed at an disadvantage in being able to compete.

Here ls the problem with that analogy....today's trucks are not engineered for that. Today's trucks are engineered and designed for fuel efficiency. Gearing, transmission, horse power and torque needed to consistently move heavy loads have slowly been phased out. The other thing is. We shouldn't put it into our mindset that we are competing against the rail industry. Thinking that we can move bulk as efficiently as a train is crazy. We in the bulk trucking are moving products the rail can't. Period. We are not competing. For example, the pet food industry. How many rail cars have you seen provide a previous load bill of lading and provide a washout receipt before unloading at a pet food facility. They don't. Pet food plants can't afford to have a bunch of sick or dying pets due to a previous load in a rail car poisoning thousands of people's pet's. We should get out of the mindset of competing with rail. It seems the entire bulkloads community has gotten into their head that grain is the only bulk commodity. And I don't know why ? Feed mills and pet food plants, some of which don't even have rail capabilities. Some have been removed. Why ? Because the rail industry is so bad. They are to slow, can't count on rail cars showing up when needed. Railroad comes to pick up empty cars, and if they are not empty, they charge the facilities enormous amount for return pick up. The railroad industry is not what it once was. Myself, I have made plenty of trips long distance, because they couldn't get rail cars at a pet food plant. And running out if product shuts down production. So guess what ? Here come the trucks to deliver on time. My 2 cents

First, I really appreciate everyone's input. What I love most about this discussion is that we're hearing perspectives from all over the country, and you can clearly see the different challenges, opportunities, and viewpoints depending on where you operate.

I hope everyone knows my heart in this conversation is simple: how do we put more money in the carrier's pocket and make trucking more profitable? I've been in this industry for over 20 years, and many of the same conversations we were having back then are still the conversations we're having today. I think it's healthy to ask ourselves how we continue to move the industry forward rather than accepting the status quo.

It's easy to say rates just need to go up, but I've lived through five economic cycles, and supply and demand has always been the biggest driver of rates. That's why I believe there's likely some common ground here worth exploring.

When you look at states and provinces that already operate with higher weight limits, there are examples where carriers, farmers, and shippers all benefit. In the bulk world especially, we're paid by weight moved—not by miles driven or flat rates. The more product a truck can legally and safely haul, the more revenue-generating capacity that truck has.

For me, the question isn't simply whether higher weights are good or bad. The question is: can we find ways to safely move more product, reduce inefficiencies, and ultimately create more earning potential for carriers? If we can put more dollars in a trucker's pocket while maintaining safety and protecting infrastructure, I think that's a conversation worth having.

Hi Jared I know that in logging they make less on trucks that haul more the Mills only calculate it by truck load so 5 axles are lighter and usally profit more do to cost of all the extras axles tires and trailers. Plus they burn more fuel hauling in the mountains of Oregon and washington. But I do agree with you that We should be able to Haul more Especailly if they keep pushing self driving We are going to have to adapt I know change is hard but We have to start thinking about these things or We will not be able to compete. I think a 5 axle truck witha 40ft front trailer hauling 80k pulling a 24ft to 30ft pull trailer and being able to put 40K on that pull trailer you could haul 120k and you can make bridge law and if you run the proper axle weights like they do in the north west states it wont hurt the roads if you make it long enough for bridge laws. but pusher axles are hard on trucks and trailers as well as the roads. I do think 40k on a spread 2 axle trailer be able to Haul 86k on 5 axles minimal extra weight for spread verse closed tandem trailer for increased pay load. Thanks

If we get out of the p/mile mindset and start looking at the compensation as p/ton or p/ton/mile, the advantages become evident. I don't do marketing, but it seems like the efficiency could help on that end.

If this is done correctly (increased weights), the carrier covers the extra cost, increases their profit margin, and saves the customer money. As things are today though, fuel mileage trumps pay load in my world.

you are spot on that rates are driven by supply and demand. This is one of the 2 main reasons I think increased weight limits would be a disaster for carriers. If each truck can haul more per trip, less trucks will be needed to move the same amount of freight, leading to a massive over supply of trucks and drivers. It would be a race to the bottom just to keep equipment moving. Drivers' pay would decrease and many would become unemployed.

The second reason relates to the idea that transportation costs would decrease. That statement alone shows what the practical result would be: lowered per ton rates. In bulk where the transport cost is caclauted by the weight, a reduction in trucking costs can only be reflected by lower per ton costs, aka lower revenue per ton to the carrier. Carriers will end up needing to stay competetive by lowering their per ton rates. That would be the case even if total truckload volume remained the same, but factor in the reduced shipment volume and over capacity and historic rate drops would take place

Balance sheets would also get wiped out as equipment values plummet from their over supply and standard weight equipment becoming worthless. It could take decades for all of that to reach a new equilibrium and still only result in lower per ton weights with no increase to bottom line.

You are evedently too young to remember when Missouri went from 73280 to: 80000. We wound up hauling heavier loads for the same or even less money.

From my experience, increased weight limits benefit the carriers who have the resources to upgrade equipment quickly. Over a span of 5-10 years, as more and more carriers purchase newer, larger trailers, rates tend to slowly slide so that you actually get back to the same rate per mile that you had before, only you're carrying 20% more weight. In your article, you say that farmers and shippers will see a reduction in per ton rates, but you also say that carriers will generate more income per mile. Even if the shipper and carrier split that 20% efficiency, the carrier loses because of increased costs.

80000# WAS a big load when tractors had 238hp and 34000# rear ends. Almost everything on the road now has 450hp or better and dive lines engineered to take the stress. We used to pull 154000# with a 318 or 335. This started as an efficiency topic, so as I see it, more trucks with more drivers burning more fuel and making more smoke does not seem to me to be more efficient. This equation doesn’t work for all duty cycles, but bulk commodities should be moved by the ton…the more you move the more you make.

I would say only increase the weight to 82,000. Reason is if you have a generator on your truck some shippers still wont let you out over 80,000 and with the more Epa regulations the more stuff they need to add to trucks making them heavier. I have a 2012 Kenworth T660 and a 2013 Freightliner Glider. Everthing is the same on both trucks execept the Freightliner has no polution control on it and theres 1,000 pds diffrence
