Hello, I'm new to the owner operator industry. I came across this site and found it very interesting. I never thought about hauling hopper loads until now. My question is, Is it best to do Hopper or Dry Van as a new owner operator?

Hoppers are cheaper and easy to undercut. Vans are pretty low as it is. Like 1dollar a mile low.

You want to pull a hopper. It is not just dump it in, drive a ways and then open the gates. Some loads are like that. But, more often than not. Running Broker Loads means you are going to work to get those loads off. Wether it is physically pushing the load off or going rounds with the Reciever and Broker.

You want to pull a Dry Van. Swing the doors. Back into the dock and get loaded. Drive a ways. Wait, Back into a dock and get unloaded on a good day.

Or you can lease to a company or dedicate to a Broker and be a Glorified Employee.

You decide and Good Luck.

Its good to ask questions but in this industry you need to step to the plate and bat yourself. When you receive advice take it with a grain of salt. Ultimately if you own the truck you will need to make decisions from day to day and some decisions need to be made flying by the seat of your pants and once you made a decision then the hindsight is 20/20. Everyone in this industry needs to pick a path and work at it and it seems about everyone is finding their own corner so for me to tell you what works for me might be the worst for you. If you get the idea I am trying to get at. Good luck this 2020 year will be 1 for the books and there will be winners and losers in everything from a to z.
