The biggest lie in trucking

I have been driving for 25+ years. Years ago trucking companies offered "lots of miles and home on weekends". Is that the biggest lie in trucking?

Our drivers get plenty of miles and are home on weekends. Sometimes if there are really high paying loads, they are run past the drivers to see if they want to work the weekend and make some good money. They are never forced to be out over the weekend.

I would say that a lot of times this would come down to the dispatcher either being an experienced driver before switching rolls or one who has never driven. I drove for 20+ years and spent weekends and holidays on the road. All I can tell you is that 30 years ago it was tough to find a meal on Christmas!

Home on weekends means getting home late Friday and leaving again after 34 hours. So while the rest of the work is home from Friday afternoon till Monday morning we get be home for a few hours. Mostly to prepare for the next week on the road.

That's what it used to mean for me too. Now it's leave Monday afternoon and back Thursday night. Life is good.

The most interesting, that they don't give a f**k about you.

I don't expect them to "give a f*** about me. It's a business transaction. Either we agree to do business or we don't.

I learned that the hard way with a particular company. Main reason I went to work for them is they promised me home weekends. Having never had a driving job with weekend home time, I assumed Friday night until Monday morning. They were okay with me believing that.

That is when I learned that home weekends mean something different in trucking. It means 34 hours home, usually sometime between Friday and Monday.

Imagine how upset I was after learning I had a misconception of what "weekend" meant. 3 decades of trucking and I still learn something new on a regular basis. LOL
