Rates rates rates always complaining about rates

Look, I keep saying it. Trash begets trash. If you are hauling trash rates or offering trash rates. That says all we need to know about those brokers, traders, shippers, and operators. Don't haul for them if the rate doesn't cover the operating cost. But make sure you truly know your operating cost. As a single truck owner operator, that means everything you spend both for the trucking business and all your personal bills as well. If you don't truly know your operating cost, you'll be taken out with the rest after a couple of years. So you have to make a decision. Do you want to be successful, or do you want to just skimp by until you're bankrupt? Are you just throwing your receipts in an envelope and then having your accountant figure out out at the end of the year? Or do you have a PnL that tracks your operating expenses? If not, you better get one. I can tell you at any time what my cost is per mile, per ton, per bushel, or flat rate. If you don't know this, what the heck are you even doing out here. If you don't know your cost, you aren't an owner operator. You are just a streering wheel holder that is in debt for equipment.

Well if you want to get rich in a hurry there is Lubbock to Az for 1.45 per mile for a floor. Unbelievable and you know somebody will say it's fuel money.

Voluntary operating authority revocations slowed for the first time in 2 years in September, but the trucking sector still has 92,000 more carriers of varying sizes than we did in 2020. The freight recession of the past 2 years shook loose the financially unstable, and those who chose to retire rather than work for cheap, or even at a loss. I personally chose to become a company driver for 3 months this year until things picked back up. Now that I'm back to running my own truck again the rates are still often times lower than I would like, but the work seems more plentiful. That tells me more carriers have left the industry. If and when the economy gets stronger the rates should tighten up a bit for those who've made through the recession. Best of luck to all.
