I'm a broker who hasn't done a bulk load before, but am in the quoting proccess for a tanker from Arkansas to Colorado 1,080 miles total. It's not moving until June. How much is the rate/mile for bulk tankers right now. I understand the market is dymanic right now but just want to get a range.

No don't under $5.00 per mile, you are only hurting your business in the long run.

Youre right. $5400. I quoted for 1000 miles. Just realized it was 1080 miles.

5.50 a mile + Fuel and Wash is the current norm from direct customers.

I'm making this comment with no ill intention and not being rude. I'm not anti broker. There many things that need to be answered before you throw a rate out there. If you are getting into liquid bulk you need to figure out what those things are before you get in. Many brokers (and trucks) have recently jumped into the tank game with no experience, and they have basically trashed the market. I remember someone commenting recently they have actually hauled loads where the tank wash cost more than they were paid for the haul. Please do yourself and everyone else pulling a tank a favor and stay with what you know. When you jump in a new segment of the industry with no knowlege and bid against those that do know the market, the carriers are the collateral damage. The tank market is way more involved and complicated than the general freight market.

That's not accurate if you have to pump, or air it off with your equipment unless you do it for free. Most that I know of don't do it for free because of the cost of the equipment.

Kinda depends on what the product is. I'm running Kosher food grade at $10+ a mile. Mostly over $12.

Thank You Barry...you are way nicer than me. I have a funeral Tuesday after I'm gonna go pu one of those trailers. See if we can get together. I'll call.

And Kyle you must be looking for something else to haul...telling the world your rate...its not that hard to figure out your shipper. Protect yourself. Foodgrade tanker has some of the most cutthroat rate cutter companies out there. And I don't have any, but I know some that do.

Standing ovation!!!!! The same thing has been done to the pneumatic side of things. As far as I know pneumatic work is at about 50% of where it was in 2019. I have people calling me that don't even know what a pneumatic is or how it works.

Hey Tracy

Good to see you. I'm thinking you could explain a thing or 2 about foodgrade. How many ships you unloaded recently?

It’s already happening I I saw TQL had a kosher load posted from Newark to Chicago for $2,000. That’s just plain stupid, I’ll DH my trucks back to Chicago before i haul at that rate.

Greetings!! Barry has offered sound advice. I would be interested in paying you to help me bid on tanker loads. I pulled tanks for over 4 years. Most people are tight lipped about rates. Without proper information, the market will continue to be polluted with terrible carriers. I can be reached at [email protected] or 478 335-0716. I'm currently working on additional information. I'd like to get more before I pursue this opportunity.

Yeah, I wish people would stay in their lane. The brokers who don't know the business probably benchmarked off of dryvan or something and thats how the rates got wrecked.

I think I might have been one of the only brokers doing tankers until somewhat recently. I don't know where all the sudden appeal came from.

I agree. All Systems Go is closing their doors at the end of the month, after 18 years in business, because of market share. Freight volume are down so now they're all trying to get into bulk.

He did come here to ask about rates and admitted he was unfamiliar with this sector of the industry. I knew nothing about ag commodities until 2 years ago and now am a successful independent operator after having only trucked for others and mostly flatbed work with some bulk thrown in. You going to jump my a** too? The only reason he won't pay what he's supposed to pay is if he's misinformed about what that pay is or he's crooked. Both will expose him soon enough. So let's keep him properly informed, eh?

Well put. Should I also sell my truck and trailer to go back to hauling milk for my old boss. Its definitely a successful business with nice new trucks and high pay but all the while i stayed out working as the boss built a million dollar house and was gone or just nonexistent spending what his employees made him

Lucky for you that the brokers before you didn't tell you to stay in your lane eh? Everyone wants people to stay away from their niche, but you might have forgotten that you were new once. You aren't born knowing how to do this.

I agree brokers should absolutely not be blindly jumping into these new sectors with no knowledge, and should be putting in the time and effort to learn everything they can. But just because you do it, doesn't mean you own it. There's a reason this younger generation stays away from a lot of new things and it's because people sh*t on them for having any type of learning curve. Everyone has had to learn how to do this at one time or another.

The brokers did, but my whole experience prior to that point was in the industrial chemical industry. I have done R&D, Product Development, Manufacturing, Sales, and then moved to transportation because I had a terrible time on the logistics side.

It was a part of my strategic vision entering the space.

In a word, Yes, you should based on your comment of nice new equipment, and high pay. Times are tough right now. Don't hate your boss for providing a high paying job with nice new equipment. He deserves to have his million dollar house, working part time, and spending his money. That is the benefit of being "the boss". Don't be a hater.. A year after your initial post, how you doin with that truck and trailer today? Are you working part time, building a million dollar house? I sincerely hope you are doing well with your investment.

My apologies, I never looked at this post after Tracy posted on May 2, 23 until it popped back up today. I most certainly would have answered you sooner. I was in no way jumping anyone a-s. I was merely stating the obvious. It is difficult to transition to liquid bulk from general freight. The question regarding a rate on a lane from point A to B is nowhere near enough information to properly quote a bulk liquid shipment. Anyone throwing a rate out there was providing bad info. Some of the information needed is: what is the product, does it require the truck to pump it on or off? How about airing it off? Will it need in transit heat, or steam? Who is responsible for the loading and unloading? Is the product hazardous? What type of trailer is required, rear, or center unload, multi compartment, insulated, non insulated, lined? How much hose and are fittings required? You see, there was nowhere near enough info provided to properly quote the lane, which is why I recommended for that person to stay in their lane until they garnered enough industry knowledge to get in. When you decided to make the switch from whatever you were doing to Ag commodities, did you do it blindly, or did you do your own research? I would guess you had people you trusted giving you information that helped you make the switch. I don't recall seeing you putting a post on here looking for info on getting into Ag commodities. If you did, you ran the risk of getting bad info that could have had tragic results for your business. Everyone's situation is different. Finally, it has been my experience, after getting inundated with requests for a rate, the rate provided is good enough to for the person asking for the rate to win the business, they then take my rate shop it, and find someone else to move it. To that end, I would rather not put rates out there unless the load is ready to be moved. If my rate is good enough to get someone work, I should be the one to move it, othwrwise I'm waisting my time working for free. I stand by my original post. Uninformed people in a market, hurt the market. On a side note, it's a year later, how is your business doing? I switch between my hopper, and tank. Both are pretty rough. I hope you're doing well, and keeping the wheels turning.
