Wash out prices have skyrocketed. I'm at my wits end one everyone jacking up prices and providing shit services. Our cost go up dollars and rates pennies. I'm getting ready to park again, or hook back onto a reefer.

The reason washouts are closing is because of deadbeats that don't sweep out their trailers where they unload

A fair amount of places won't let you climb in there and sweep out, even if you wanted too, and there's nothing better than seeing dead deer laying beside the road by the piles of grain someone swept out on the shoulder. I personally don't like seeing piles of fertilizer on the shoulders either....so that leaves the washout as the next logical place, right?

Go to Cargill and try to sweep out. They will ban you from all properties for violating safety rules of cargill. Some Purina locations are the same. So to say "deadbeats won't sweep out" should they just violate the rules and get banned? Then you're messing with someone's income.

You cant just sweep out. Some places require a washout and wont load you if you dont have a valid washout recipte! Such if you hauled M&B meal some places wont let you pick up a load of apples next! Or some type of fertilizer needs a good washout! A lot of places charge outrageous prices for a crap job! Thats part of pulling a hopper!

You would have to talk to them about that, but from what I remember they couldn’t keep help around, the last year I did business there you could see a downward spiral, one time the help quit in the middle of my wash, and the owner himself had to finish the job, shortly after that they closed, and if I recall correctly Lakeville was the next one to shut the Doors, probably around 2016. All these truck washes followed the same pattern prior to their demise, just like the mom and pop truck stops that preceded them. All the other truck washes I mentioned have closed in the past year.

There is a clear and obvious pattern here, first the trucking industry developed a revolving door, next the restaurants at the truckstops developed a revolving door, then the truck washes developed a revolving door, and now we are watching the truck repair facilities become infected with the same disease, reputable shops many of whom are factory authorized, now have a shortage of help and a revolving door. Maybe some of you are willing to live on TV dinners out of your microwave, and drive around with road salt and grease on your equipment as it corrodes apart driving down the road, while you 1099 your company drivers, but how many of your drivers are willing to start turning their own wrenches at the rest areas, just to keep rates in the toilet?

No it does not. You can't do that. The water goes straight into rivers, fertilizer and all. Besides grain clogs up sewer lines. I always manage. I just find a place where it goes not matter. A dirt road by farms is fine for fertilizer. If you dump feed, sweep it up and pile it in the grass so critters can eat it. I also hate seeing grain dumped on the asphalt in the rest area or off ramp. If not a lot of crap, I open rato and torsos and just drive. Blows out dust and small stuff and no piles. But there should be a fed law requiring places to allow you to sweep out.

Angry? No, disappointed that the idiots have about destroyed a once great industry? Absolutely, and I get the feeling that you are proud to contribute to its demise, you obviously think it’s all a big Joke even as news articles appear pointing out that shippers are now starting their own private fleets to try and counter the damage that some of you have done to the industry, but if you don’t like my opinions maybe you should stop reading and responding to them? Or does some mental disorder prevent you from doing that?

Marcus, washouts do NOT run that rinse water down the sewer. Or at least they aren't supposed to. It's illegal. Grease, oil, antifreeze, fertilizer, you name it, you can't dump it down the drain and that's why legitimate washouts re use their water.... and contain the sediment. I'd bet the person that mows the grass where you are dumping feed disagrees, and I'd bet the farmer that lives on the dirt road where you are dumping fertilizer isn't as ok with it as you are. Why don't you bring big containers with, sweep out into that and dump it in your driveway when you get home. Watch what that pile looks and smells like after a week or two in the summer. And as for the critters, how's their health after eating moldy grain that's sat out in the rain? There's a beautiful news article on bulk loads just this week about that situation.

Sold my hopper because of wash outs and and no body paying up for them. We had three truck wash's here in Springfield Illinois and now we have none. Company's will not accept a wash certifcate from the trucking company. I pulled hazmat tanks for eleven years for Dana and every tank went back to terminal and was cleaned and charged for it. The BULL SHIXX in the hopper business just blows me away. You haul chicken meal, you just need a rinse or even just blow it out, but haul meat and bone, and it's kept to your self. As a scale man at ADM told me, nobody ever hauls meat and bone or fertilizer!!!! In sixteen years pulling a hopper I only hauled two loads of meat and bone and five loads of fertilizer, it didn't pay enough for the hassle. Finally got tired of the four to eight hour waits for loading and unloading and no money, and then add in the ELD, I don't think it ever got off personal. Now just pull a dump, life is simple again!!

I agree with Dave on this one. That's just my opinion. Businesses that pay a good wage have absolutely zero problems finding reliable help. To the people that think $24 per hour with some benefits is a good wage I have to ask if you are familiar with what a reliable house and a trustworthy car cost in the year 2022. Or just what it cost to raise a family in modern times. From my experience the people that think mid 20s is a good wage bought their house in 1992 and haven't had a kid living at home since 2004. I personally don't see anything wrong with us having the conversation about why the money isn't there to attract the people in some cases. I can't speak for others but I know I will personally wash trailers for the rest of my life until I retire for $34 an hour and full benefits, and if a washout can't afford to pay someone that then I go back to Dave's question about what is wrong with the industry that nobody can afford to pay anybody what it's required to get someone to show up. I also think blaming the government is the easy way out if the type of people you are looking for to work for you are the type of people willing to sit at home on free handouts thrn I don't feel bad for you . Cash is King this is America people should not have to work for free

Some cargil and Purina will let you but not the big ones in bigger cities. Wichita won't even let you poke your head under and see if all product came out. Most places I wash out at, and I do it often, are under 50 bucks. Some only 30.

I assume it is same as a car or truck wash since they wash trucks in same bay as trailers. You may be referring to trailer wash out that do things like cattle trailers. They don't ho fine sewer. They have ponds as you stated. Truck washed that wash out trailers are no different than any other wash. That is why you can not ho get Hopper washed out if it has product in it.

Oh and I do not think k places that doevislize in dirty trailers are going out of business because of dirty trailers. I only commented on dirty trailers bring washed out st truck washes that also do trailers. They do not allow product because they have a sewer line, not a pond. The washes are no different than any other company. They need to make s good profit or they go under. They need good help. These days good help I'd hard to find in a world that refuses to recognize starter jobs like burger joint, is not a 100k s year job. It is a few bucks an hour. Younger people these days think their first job should be big money. No ladder to climb.

Eric, you attack Dave every chance you get. Every time there is a conversation about industry annoyances or low rates, YOU are the one that gets bent out of shape and tries to shut the conversation down. You and I have talked on the phone about rates before and YOU told me how irritated you were with people like Dave saying to pass up low rates. Your words were something like "every one of us haul 1.50 and 1.80 freight and get by just fine" . I don't think most professional companies with the goal of earning a decent living share your opinion on that. I have nothing personal against you, I enjoyed chatting with you on the phone, but I don't understand where your animosity towards Dave's conversations comes from. It's just a conversation!! And I seem to remember you saying you stay relatively local....so why would you shut down conversation that us over the road truckers have? You don't see what we see. I see way more poverty in the united States than there should be, so conversations about money should be fair game. Speaking of money, how many businesses close for any reason other than not being profitable?

So gratitude has now been replaced with a entitlement mentality? You pretend to be a self made man as you collect all those subsidies and go on bashing others for recieving food stamps, while you accumulate land and other assets? You praise Socialism for the wealthy, yet condemn it for the poor? You don't want to work for peanuts yet you expect others to, and when they dont you always resort to calling them names, like fat lazy and stupid? And then wonder why there is nobody to serve you at the truck stops? This one made me laugh. Nope, most of the crops you raise don't feed anyone. Mmmmmm...my favorite meal, pioneer 9917 on the cob. Why don't you lay out for us how much you've paid in taxes vs how much you've got back. I used to make that exact same argument. Exactly the same!!! Then I added up all the numbers! Everything agricultural is tax exempt. Agriculture is a broken system and always will be. Taking the subsidies just because the neighbors do is insane. Choosing to be part of a non profitable industry is insane. Every farmer could quit producing for a year and NOBODY would starve. Except for the beef side of agriculture. Grain is a giant glut of overproduction thanks to subsidies. So I'll patiently wait for the numbers from you to show that you've paid in more than you received. I'd also bet the numbers Dave found do not include your CSP payments, crop insurance, equip, or any other programs you might be enrolled in. I also consider anyone that claims to be a self made man a total liar. Nobody gets by without help of some sort.

Oh yes here’s Captain Commodity guy….. I’m not sure if you’ve read all the same signs everyone else has, but a good number of facilities will ban you for getting inside your trailer. Most don’t provide an air wand or catwalk either. If you get caught dumping on the side of the road that’s also a hefty fine. Then there’s the truck-stop parking lot that so many of you Captain Commodity Karen’s like to put on blast over there on FB. Am I missing the part about how you guys do a lot of talk, but you never give any detailed explanation of how awesome you are at being Captain Commodity, and how Captain Commodity does things? These washouts that complain about having to deal with what comes out of your trailer are trash. Sorry, but that like me complaining about dealing with oil changes, tires, upkeep, or any general maintenance on my truck. It’s called “cost of doing business.”

I did not know after 41 years of trucking that truck washes cost just what I could afford. I always paid what they charged.

So if they can not afford to pay thier help it is thier fault of mis managment

Dont insult the truckers and trucking companies.

So that makes since. If you dont sweep out, that causes the washout to go out of buisness.

What!

I personally don't like seeing piles of fertilizer on the shoulders either....so that leaves the washout as the next logical place, right?"

And that has to do with what, when it comes to them going out of buisness?

All these truck washes followed the same pattern prior to their demise, just like the mom and pop truck stops that preceded them. All the other truck washes I mentioned have closed in the past year."

That still doesnt have nothing to do with the trucker

Truck wash in Urbana, IA is closed. I heard a rumor that Belmont Travel Center in WI may be closing.

I'm not seeing where I ever said that a dirty trailer has anything to do with a washout going out of business. I'm pretty sure I made it super duper clear that I disagreed with that statement. I even made a super sweet body shop comparison....

A business will raise the cost of their product up until the point where sales drop off, therefore the market is determined by what the customer is willing to pay, and in this case the truckers are the customers. But if you believe that you the business owner sets the rates maybe you should tell your broker you need [email protected] mile and will not accept anything less? I’m willing to bet you will be sitting at home a lot after that, but it’s just my opinion.

Or you can price yourself at $1.50 per mile and be busier than hell.

If you don't have your own broom maybe you should buy one. You can sweep out your trailer at truck stop and use the trash receptacles for the dry load refuse. I've had many people asking to use my broom. Finally said no after I had to clean mine after they used it. Buy your own broom

I'm confused. Are you bragging on the internet that people borrow your broom? What does that fact that you think you are the ONLY bulk trucker with a broom have to do with 1. Loads that require a washout and 2. People thinking a dirty trailer is a problem for washouts? And 3. What does your "greatest broom on earth" have to do with treating other people's property with respect by not dumping your stuff on it? Lastly number 4. What would posses you to think I have no broom or don't clean out my trailer just because I disagree with dumping your crap anywhere you see fit? How heavy is that garbage bag after you dump your bulk clean out in it? Does the bag tear when you help them empty that trash bag with your 50 pounds in it? I'm gunna guess you don't help do you? Have a good one Stan, you're my favorite character on south park!

Goodness no I'm not having a bad day. You commented about sweeping out your trailer at a truck stop, and commented about me needing to get a broom. I just addressed those comments in my reply to you. All of us have a broom, and most people don't sweep out their trailers at truck stops. I don't see where you said anything about not getting loaded? Maybe I misunderstood or maybe you're backpedaling? Either way, I'm not wound up about it Stan. It's just my personal opinion that's it's disrespectful to clean out a trailer on someone else's property unless they happen to be ok with it. Almost every place I've been to for fertilizer has a designated clean out area, livestock facilities have always let me clean out right where I unload.... and as for the big grain places that don't let people climb up and clean out? Well I don't go there because they don't pay enough, but if people properly maintain their trailer, I don't see a reason that regular old grain should hang up in there in the first place, and if a shipper requires a washout, well a broom is irrelevant.

Many truckers are bankrupt now because inflation is rising in the country, gasoline prices are rising, and the global crisis is coming. Almost every business is suffering great losses now, some of my friends have gone bankrupt, and in the hope of restarting it, they are turning to insolvency practitioners. I own a small gas station in the village, and it's getting harder to buy fuel. I put a lower price than my competitors, and it attracts most customers, but I'm not sure it will be safe for my profits in the future.

That has nothing to do with anything. Unemployment numbers are back to pre pandemic levels. What changed is people realized that working for 8 dollars an hour was dumb if they could get 20 dollars an hour at Amazon. That's where the minimum wage workers went. I personally don't blame them.

I HAD TWO FRIENDS BACK IN THE EARLY 1990'S ONE OF THEM OWNED A GAS STATION SERVICE GARAGE WHERE HE DID MOST ALL TYPE OF CAR MAINTENANCE. HE TOLD ME HE WAS LUCKY TO MAKE A DIME PROFIT ON GAS IS THAT TRUE? HE TOLD ME THE GAS WAS MORE OF A LURE TO GET PEOPLES CARS IN HIS SHOP FOR REPAIRS. HIS YOUNGER BROTHER AND OLDER FATHER PUMPED THE GAS AND WOULD USUALLY FIND THINGS ON PEOPLES VEHICLES THAT NEEDED REPAIRS OR OIL CHANGES AND ASK THE PEOPLE IF THEY WANTED TO BRING IT BACK FOR REPAIRS. THE OTHER FRIEND OWNED A CONVIENT STORE AND HE TOLD ME THE SAME THING ABOUT A DIME PROFIT. HE SAID HIS MAIN MONEY WAS SELLING SODA POP AND OTHER SNACKS AND PIZZA COOKED AND READY TO GO SANDWICHES. THERE IS ALSO A BAR A LIQUOR STORE ACROSS THE STREET FROM HIS CONVIENT STORE SO THAT MAYBE HELPS HIS CUSTOMER BASE SOME ALSO.
