Hello and how is everyone doing I was just looking for some help and advice on how to get work with a company directly rather than being with a broker like for example is it better to go in person ,email them or call them and if so how should I talk to them what should I bring and what should I tell them that they want to hear. Anyways thanks for the help and thank you for your response.

First off, know what you truly have to offer someone. Know as much as you can about who you will be targeting. And actually the market you are approaching. For the sake of pricing etc. Unless you are in sales this isn't fun at first. Fear of embarassment. Making a fool of yourself. Rejection. Maybe practice on someone who isn't your main target to get some of that out of the way. Make that first "cold call" armed as best you can. But make it.

I've been at this a long time. This part of business could be the toughest but probably one of the most important parts in order to succeed. I've gotten rather good at it and enjoy the deal making part. I don't always win but that's part of the game, experience. Frankly brokers are actually potential customers same as direct shippers.

"You can't be motivated to do something, you have to do something to be motivated" Zig Ziglar. Get going.

Good Morning Steve,

I own a trucking company and a brokerage. We haul what we can and broker out the rest. The first year in business was hard. It took a lot of cold calling customers. We utilized bulk loads to find contacts and then started calling. It takes a lot of time and presistance. With one truck we couldnt haul nearly what we can with 13 trucks and a brokerage, so we had to find a different way to leverage those contacts. We had to figure out what we offer that the bigger companies couldn't. I can tell you that in the first year we never gave back a load or didnt get one picked up. We refused to do it. We proved that we were reliable without a doubt.

I would also say, don't count out working with a brokerage... just find a good one. For example, we only take loads that our own trucks will haul, because likely someone won't pick up a load and my truck is going to have to get it. Therefore, we fight for higher rates and we have that ability because a guy in one truck can take 5, but I can take 50, so it makes the customers job a lot easier and they are much more willing to negotiate.

The biggest thing is just know your worth and promote that!

Danielle
