Where do you start looking for customers for tanker work

That depends, are you talking about brokered loads, or direct customers? For brokered loads, you're in the right place. Haul some loads for different brokers, work with the ones you like. Read the forums, reply to people and establish relationships.

For direct customers, that takes a bit of shoe leather and a sales pitch. Find a few companies to go talk to, prepare some information, maybe even something to leave with them so that one time someone drops the ball and they look at that little magnifying thing on their desk, or the pen they're writing with and remember that guy that came in and wanted work. Be presentable and professional.

Sometimes brokers get more money than you can, so be careful about just taking a contract. Know what the rates are, and don't work too cheap. We are specialized carriers. We do not ever haul for our break even rate. That means you, me, that guy, them over there, none of us. Right now I won't move a tank truck for under $7/ loaded mile plus at least 15% fsc, and really never get push back around $10 plus 20% fsc. We've got DOT407 & MC307 stainless tanks.
