Yes you can cross state line with ag exempt products without an MC# . Must have a US DOT# that is exmpt for hire. Have done it for 22yrs. You just need apportioned plates and IFTA. But that is all you can haul is Ag exempt products grain ,feed ,logs,milk,and livestock.Go to FMCSA web site they have a list of what is Ag exempt.

We do it with in state plates we just by a permit for state we crossing into most states call it a trip permit cover plate and ifra

Thanks for your input guys, I feel there's so many grey areas in that "exempt" list. What one DOT officer considers exempt the next one may have a different opinion. I'm thinking the safe route is to get an MC #. I pretty much stay local, 150 air mile radius from home, occasionally I may go farther. Again any information and pointers are more than welcome, as I'm a newer owner operator.

Just get the mc number. Its not that difficult and costs peanuts when you are getting all your other numbers anyway. Then you can throw the ag exempt thing out the window if another opportunity comes up. My philosophy is dont short change yourself when you start out with numbers because it will trigger a new audit if you get it down the road.

When I get my MC # am I going to have to get an e-log for if & when I may travel outside of my 150 air mile radius?

You do not need e-log if you don't go outside of your 150 nautical mile over if I remember correctly 8 times in 30 day. The only reason I had to get e-log was because they hadn't made the 150 nautical mile exemption for non ag.

There is a certain number of times a month you can travel over a 150 miles with out a ELD.

As long as you don't go over 100 miles 8 times a month you don't need a ELD. If you go over 8 times a month you must have a ELD if your truck is a 2000 year on up.

I run the local 150 mile paper and you may go outside your 150 mile circle 8 days every month and use paper logs. Works great for me and also works for the dot man. Study your local exemptions sometime. Its actually really lenient on a few things.

I believe the rule states ... 8 days in a 30 day period.
