Light Weight Hopper Rigs

I got into it because I am a custom harvester for half the year and I wanted my equipment to make some income the rest of the year. Currently we have heavy trucks. We have seven axle rigs... for example we have a 2005 Intl 9900i with a C15 and a pusher hooked to a triple axle Timpte. In the states we harvest in, we can load these trucks to the gills. However, as you know, commercially trucking with such a rig the tare weight becomes an issue. In states that limit you to 80k, we can only haul 23 tons. My question is, if a guy wanted to go to a super light rig... what tractors and trailers would you suggest? My dream would be to have a seven axle rig that is under 30,000 lbs tare weight... Is this possible or should I continue to dream? Thanks in Advance

Truck would need to be a daycab Aluminum cab (kw/pete have Aluminum cabs) 40k rears single frame truck with a smaller motor (12.7 detroit for example) and stand on the ground when they punch the ticket and you might make it

Case in point, Idaho fertilizer back to North Dakota used to be in the 80-100 dollar per ton range 10 years ago. Now companies are hauling 40 tons of product into the state but doing it for 60-65/ton. Really doesn't make sense to me but that's why we don't go that direction without a good load behind the load we are taking out.

If you are going to run 7 axles, you will not get down in weight. Ditch the pusher and get a tandem trailer that is all aluminum and make sure your rates are good enough to make money. The trend is more axles to haul more weight so the rate is lower. Case in point, Idaho fertilizer back to North Dakota used to be in the 80-100 dollar per ton range 10 years ago. And there is almost nobody I run across that is anywhere close to that weight wise so I would say it’s not easy to do. Small motors, wide base, lightweight specs on trailer.

So I have a 2011 386 Pete with a 63” stand up bunk, 13 speed, Timpte 3 axle and it is about 28k tare weight full of fuel with wide base tires all around. And there is almost nobody I run across that is anywhere close to that weight wise so I would say it’s not easy to do. Small motors, wide base, lightweight specs on trailer.
