ELD rules

We have a couple trucks that run over the road. One of which is eld exempt, the other we only run over the road 8 days or less in a 30 day window. It's getting to the point that is hard to do and have started looking for an eld. We run Garmin GPS in the trucks (mostly to help with ifta reports) and see Garmin makes an inexpensive unit that plugs into the data port of trucks, but has bad reviews. I figured as long as elds have been in use now that there should be some good options out there now. Is there an app that works well? The Garmin doesn't have any subscription fees which I like. This truck does run quite a bit of local stuff inside 150 miles. Do you just turn it off and go back on time sheets like we do now on local runs? Is there a problem having skipped days in an eld if it's off running local on a time sheet?

Can’t speak to the Garmin, I use keeptruckin. But I run local, regional, and occasionally OTR. When I do local for a few weeks, I switch the setting on the app to local. It still tracks miles and hours, so no time sheet necessary. I do that for IFTA tracking. I think keeptruckin raised there prices though. Cant remember what i paid last year.

Keep trucking is the simplest easiest one to use . They changed name to motive .

I called Motive after your guys recommendations. Maybe it was good when it was keep trucking, no way would I pay those guys anything. I couldn't get a clear phone connection, they kept calling me from some kind of app - 1st was a TN number, then a CA number, calls kept dropping. I called them back and finally got a clear connection, the whole conversation felt like a scam call. I'd like to talk to an American in America.

Im not sure what the point in changing the name to "Motive" was all about, however, they also changed their logo to something displaying rainbow colors; Anyone know why? I sure hope it's not what I think they are trying to imply...

I've been using e road for almost 5 years now and have zero complaints. It's a little expensive up front and then monthly if you want ifta and everything but EVERY time you call and ask a question you talk to a real person. I don't do any local stuff but I think it has a local function where the eld functions as a time sheet. I cheated on them this winter to try to save a few bucks and tried an eld that runs through a tablet, was a big problem in areas without cell service and the tech support was the worst I've ever experienced. Shane on me because you get what you pay for! Good luck

Take a look at Konexial My20. It has an ag exempt mode and their customer service is awesome. They also have all the training videos you could ask for on YouTube

Customer service has never been there strong suit. But I will say since the ELD mandate, I’ve only had to contact them once. And it was because my card expired. The ELD still worked, but I could not get in the admin dashboard to IFTA information.
