C15 Acert Twin Turbo Conversion

Hey guys, I just bought a conversion kit from PDI with the Big Boss tuner. I'm in the process of doing an overhaul and wanted to know was it necessary or suggested that I go from the 18.1 to 16.1 ratio compression conversion or is this just overkill? PDI doesn't mention that it's needed.

I did that to my last truck, yes you need to drop the compression to 16:1. PDI makes a kit for it, that's who I used, get the teflon coated pistons and bearings. I think they call it a high HP kit. Make sure you have a trusted tune. I had a bad tune that was too much HP and blew a couple of head gaskets. I'd stay at 550hp.

Sorry not PDI, I forgot who I got the rebuild kit.. I'll go back in my records and post later.

The 16:1 Kit came from PAI Industries :

PAI Industries, Inc.

Corporate Office
950 Northbrook Parkway, Suwanee, GA 30024

Phone: 770-822-1000

I think the part number for the kit is: C15107-010HP

Pistons : 311195HD

Liners: 3616090E

Double check the numbers with them if you go that way, my invoice is faded.

Are you eliminating the actuators?

Just a question, why are you doing a conversation? With the proper tunes the twins will pull and run like a champ. Mine does I know that?

Thanks Barry! I actually just placed my order and got the exact HP conversion from PAI as you. Added a new cylinder head since mine was cracked. Bought a pricey Big Boss tuner and conversion kit from twin to single turbo from PDI so I hope it's money well spent. Hopefully I'll be up and rolling soon. I'll keep everyone posted on the results if anyone is in a simpler situation.

I'm leaving the AVI in. The tuner that I bought will only work if it's in per the manufacture.

From what l've read converting to a single turbo simplies things and less to repair. The Acert seems to be the most problematic with Cat's attempt to meet EPA guidelines. Also since my head cracked and I needed an overhaul this has been a miserable time finding parts and a mechanic to do the work. I've been told the wait on repair was 2 months where I'm at. Also, parts were 60-90 days out. Pretty much I just want to extend this from happening as long as possible.

I left my hem in but disconnected them.

I did it because I felt the accert built too much heat. Going to a single turbo reduced the running temp.

Once you drop the compression and single turbo it you are no longer in Cat specs. Big Rig Power in Canada has a very good 550 tune when you put it back together. You will be very happy with it

The actuators bleed off cylinder pressure, that why they run so much boost. By switching to a low single turbo, and low comp pistons you may take to much cylinder pressure out .

I'm not sure what motor we are talking about, mine was a 2006 Cat MXS. Therefore, my posts are only relating to the MXS, I don't know enough about it to give any other advice. My mechanic said diconnecting the actuators was part of the single turbo conversion.

Who did your tuning? What is MPG?

Hey, Ron Jones. Could you answer the above question? I have one too that should have a good word spoken to it.

I converted a twin to a single and used 2ws ecm. Engine is better problem is cat won't touch it it is an 05 kw. Kenworth won't touch it because "it is an acert block and must be an acert engine". Even though the nos is less than the acert when epa checked it with the sniffer.
told both cat and kw. It is my engine they said it was there reputation.

the 2ws does get .7 better mpg than the acert. Going to take quite awhile to pay for itself.
the twin turbo does have faster acceleration

Kurt murry tuned mine out of northern Virginia. I went from about a 3.9 average to 5.8 average on MPG and she runs great.
