Buying A Hopper

Nov 11, 2018 at 07:46 PM CST
I am buying a hopper trailer and I was wanting to see if someone could tell me what to look for in buying a used trailer. What wears out or generally goes bad on a hopper trailer. I have dumps but relatively new to the hopper market. What trailer would be best for over the road....How tall...ag hopper or grain hopper etc.. Will be hauling mostly feed but anything is subject to change at any time. Thanks,,,Mark

+ 1 - 1
Depends on the area where you run. In Texas and surrounding states I've found 43' x 78" works best for us. I've run 96" and 102" and loke the 102's for the additional capacity . I've got a 2015 Wilson for sale if you are looking used 43 x 102 x78.

If you would buy at least a 78 high by 102 wide with standard hoppers then you would have enough capacity to haul rice hulls and wheat midds.

Pay close attention to the hopper doors on used trailers. Wherethe door slides, where the bearings sit under the door, gearbox and knuckles ect, if this is wore out when you buy it it's quite expensive to repair. Watch the seams on the inside of the hopper where the sheets meet or overlap. If the seams are rough or have spaces it's hard to get the trailer cleaned out decent between loads, and some products don't slide over those seams. I got myself into trouble with that issue

For the price of used any more just go new and get what you want how you want. Before you know it the rivets are out of the overlap sheets as dale said. the rear suspension and frame is rusted out and cracked kingpin plate cracked and it needs new doors. I would say only buy used hopper if you know the seller on a personal level and know the general vicinity of where he might sleep. Especially if you don't know what you're looking at. I've had personal experience with timptie hoppers they have treated us good considering just like any other hopper they are built for lite weight.

I thank everyone for the replies. With that I think I will buy something new. Used trailers that I have found don't seem to be taken care of like we take care of ours. All of our trucks are new and we do not have very many mechanical issues so why mess up a good thing. Thanks again for all of your help.

in all honesty....go direct to timpte and buy a brand new one , that way you know whats been in it , fertilizer , salt , calcium and other stuff is all very corrosive to these aliuminum trailers , rather than buy someone elses problems you are better off to just go new, you can buy what you want from timpte direct and save your self some money and headaches. from mid 30's to 40 depending on what you want , a good friend just picked up a super cube 90 inch trailer with lights , lift axle and a couple other options for 41k.
