Are computers making us stupid

Everywhere I go these days to buy parts it seems like the trend is to hire young kids with computer skills and no automotive knowledge who don’t know the difference between a drain plug and a glow plug, if they can’t enter a vin# make and model, they seem to be completely helpless, most of the time these younger folks strike out and say there is no such thing, then it’s always some older person who steps up and has to do their job for them saving the day, by pulling out a old catalog and then checking the bin location, often times succeeding in locating the parts, only to put the stock numbers into a computer that says they do not exist, it seems to be a epidemic everywhere you go these days, I can’t help but think computers have turned society into idiots.

Yeah. Frustrating on so many levels. On the bright side. I found a young man (mid 30's) at the parts counter of one of my local Kenworth dealers that has 15 plus years as a mechanic for a fleet that run Kenworth trucks. JACKPOT!!! Pretty new to the parts job. I didn't ask why he give up turning wrenchs. Still has to pound the keyboard to get anywhere but that's the system.

On the flip side I got a real screwing by the same dealer group different location for a transmission job. It took an inexperienced, inept mechanic a week to do a two day job and they had the nerve to charge me accordingly. The labor was nearly three times what it should have been. NEVER AGAIN MHC!!

Young people are not teach how to solve problems the steps to take the solve problems they don't have the ingenuity to figure things out like the older folks above 35 age who didn't have all the computer stuff helping them or handicapping down the entire time

I talked to a guy the other day who had visited with an instructor at a school with a diesel tech program that said he doesn’t see any students that have what it takes to make it as a mechanic. Mostly because of no real work ethic.
