Trump has Ruined Trucking

Guys, I know most on this site are conservative, but i can't help but thinking Trump has turned his back on us haulers. Fuel is up, rates are down, and now we have to Big Brother government watching us with the ELD's. While we suffer, Trump is off galavanting in Asia - neglecting the heartland and the heartbeat of the USA. For those who voted for Trump, what do you think now? Or is it too early to judge? Thanks

Trump has lost much of his shine in my book, however, I fail to see what he has done to raise fuel prices, lower trucking rates or implement the ELD mandate. From where I sit, lots of folks are blaming him for all their woes. Kindda like four wheelers blaming trucks for all the traffic congestion. Just my opinion

I also had hopes that Trump would turn back the ELD. It's still possible but unlikely. Trump hasn't done as much as I had hoped, but he has has the intense hatred of the media and all liberals to fight against at every turn.

You do realize that under the previous administration that the ELDs is a passed and signed law..it was tucked into the highway bill...you just cant unsign a LAW.. if you want to blame anybody.. blame your senator and congressman or woman..the only thing that trump can do is to get a new law tossing this current law..and you really think thst your congressman or senator is going to do that?the only way toget rid of this ELD is torun 1000% leagal..and things will fall totally out of place..dont forget next november there is an election.. why dont you think about voting this time..

Mr.Bascom, was very eloquent with his response. I'm not sure how you can blame this on Trump. The ELD was done awhile back. Our unorganized bunch of truck owners have sat back and let it get to this point. I'm not sure how to make it go away before letting it become a disaster. If Trump is watching he seems to like to see things come to a COMPLETE head and then solve it. Who knows.

On one hand I don't want to see this thing pass for obvious reasons. On the other hand I do most of my Business with the largest Asphalt company in the Us. They have demanded us to run 18-20 hrs day in and day out while pumping their chest about safety. They have been reliant on the majority of their O/O to bail them out when they can't figure out how to dispatch and then threaten you if you don't. It will be bitter sweet to see the company in complete chaos next season. I also don't see how trump had anything to do with the current situation. I have other companies calling daily with work. Not the case in the last several years.

It's funny you should mention asphalt plants. Up hear in my neck of the woods, we have a constant revolving door on the driver situation, because too many people can't figure out when to stop adding trucks, so the rates are completely in the toilet. Everything is now a backhual rate. As a result half the drivers are now unable to speak English. If it's not the somali's, it's the South Africans, constantly delivering the wrong product to the wrong plant, dumping on the wrong pile, if they are not busy tipping trailers over, or ripping tailgates off. Meanwhile OSHA creeps around, handing out violations....Its funny as hell to watch, like bevis and butthead.

Russ, Do you feel that it's ok for the government to exploit people, and use them against each other? Becuase that's really what is going on here. They are allowing industry to use these people to drive down the price of labor. If they are to be here, shouldn't they receive equall pay, and training? Should there not be one standard, that applies equally to everyone? How is it ok to have people who cannot communicate, around heavy machinery? Our politicians tell everyone that they are here to do the jobs, that we won't do, but is that really what's going on?

What do you expect him to do. Any policy enacted by executive order can be undone by the same. I think most don't really understand how government is supposed to work. Emphasis on supposed, a lot goes into the making of a law. The biggest problem is unelected bureaucrats, congress bestows on agencies the power to make regulations that carry the full weight of the law. The congress sidesteps accountability by doing this. Regulations should by the constitution be debated and voted on by congress.
If you want to change the way things are start at home with local and state positions.

I support Trump as I always have, fuel had to come up. Why? It's a signal of helthy economic demand. Fuel will never be as cheap as it use to be, apply the inflation index to fuel and you will see that these levels are reasonable. Rates are low because of economic demand, it's a commodity business that we're in, however economic growth is steady and higher than we've seen it in years. Remember, name one of Trump's policies that has made it through? Exactly, they're fighting him now asthey have fought him. Why? Well the special interests like screwing working a.k.a main street america, working america, outside the beltway, whatever you want to refer to it as. The E-log mandate isn't going anywhere for a variety of reasons. Trucking has a PR problem, the education system doesn't introduce young people to trucking early enough since you cant cross state lines until you're 21 and most insurance companies won't insure a carrier if they'll put any one behind the wheel younger than 24; so what we have is a situation where the majority of Americans know nothing about trucking except the very small percentage of involved in catosrophic wrecks that make the evening news or the ambulance chasers' t.v. commercials. Is this fair? No, but it's the way things are, so there is no chance of the eletronic logging mandate going away. However, E-logs aren't all bad. We all no people out there who don't run legally and never have, and as a result they're able to move freight for rates reputable carriers don't want to think about working for. So we'll be on an equal playing field. But what I really see as a positive is the fact that we'll finally be able to push shippers/receivers to stop abusing truckers. Now not all do, but I think we can all think of places we don't want to go because we know it'll mean demurrage and - the vast majority of which - we are not compensated for. FMCSA has tried to go after these abusers for us, alas the courts slapped their hands and said you have no statutory authority to do so. But having these records of demurrage time will make it easier for us to negotiate demurrage, if not demand it, or just increase our ratesto compensate for it if they wont pay demurrage.

Also, Trump's trip to Asia is certainly no sell out. He made it clear in speeches that were made in those countries that "The days of America being taken advantage ofare over!" And, as much as we want it to, this can't happen over night since I don't believe withdrawing from Asia and not using our leverage to stop North Korea from developing a nuclear weapon that can reach our west coast will help trucking.

No, things take time. I don't like to hear that anymore than anyone else, but trucking is no where close to being "ruined" and certainly not by President Trump. It is true that the glory days of trucking ended a long time ago, long before Trump, however rate forecasts are showing higher rates coming very soon and probably more sustainable this time around than in late 2014 through mid 2015 since that was mainly due to pent-up demand. And 'big-brother' is watching us if we have a cell phone, probably illegally, thanks to the Snowden revelation that we were even made aware of those abuses. D.C. isn't going to have an office dedicated to checking your E-log live-feed, but no longer will people be able to lie so easily on their logs, but the courts have recognized trucking as a heavily regulated activity and ruled that the mandate is indeed legal and in no-way a violation of the drivers' right to privacy. Yes I know it is going to hurt not being able to fudge a little here and there, but the people who are right-out falsifying in a big way will no longer be able to continue. If we see major congestion and parking problems along with capacity crunches, hopefully it'll be short-lived as all of the ridiculous FMCSA logging rules will quickly be rethought. One reason we have such riduculous rules now is that, if a driver new how to do it, they'd make the paper look right conforming to whatever new rules were sent down on the industry, yet very little would actually change.

Anyway, I'm trying to look on the bright side as far as E-logs go. They're being installed in my trucks as I'm writing this. Regardless of what the E-logs will do to our industry, President Trump didn't do this to us. And from my personal experience with him on the campaign, I can tell we have a man in the White House who cares about us - the working people of real America. If you are mad that what was promised isn't coming fast enough, well pick up your phone and start dialing all of the senators and congressmen who were elected promising the same things, yet when it came time to vote - lets us the Obamacare repeal as an example - we found out that apparenty a lot of people were lying, and President Donald J. Trump was not one of them. It did take time for him to realize that he would have to fight tooth and nail to get anything to his desk, things like Obamacare repeal that supposedly Republicans had planned out and ready to pass... yeah, the President wasn't lying and it is not the fault of President Trump that the establishment is trying to stop all of his pro-American policies. And they might win, as long as we point the finger at Trump everytime we think that things either aren't happening or aren't happening quick enough. Does anyone think we were better off uring the Bush and Obama years? I know my company wasn't, looking back I don't know how we survived it.

There is a reason why Trump was in Asia. Remember the country called north Korea. The ELD was also introduced during the Obama administration, didn't hear your uproar then. Trump isn't perfect but has done better than the last few presidents that we have had. Do us a favor, if you don't like the President, that's your business, but don't ignore the fact that he is slowly getting things back together for the good of the U.S..Have you written to the administration about the electronic log book issues and concerns? Matter of fact, other than complaining here, what have you done? Don't blame Trump for this just because it's convienent for you to do so. The harder road has more work, more challenges, like writhing to your senator, representatives, ect.... so, are you taking the easy road or the hard road? I can go on both I think you know where I'm going with this. God bless America and those who haul for a living.

When you own a business you have to look for victory anywhere you can find it. One of the positive things that came out of trump, is he has made everyone aware of the "Fake News", and that it does exist...... Just look at how CBS 5 Arizona covered the trucker shortage story, They did not mention the ELD, but rather they chose to put the spin out there, that trump must let more Mexican trucks in here and embrace the guest worker program, becuase all of us Lazy Americans don't want to drive a truck anymore...... Then they conviniantly leave out the fact that prior to December 18th of 2017, it wasn't such a problem. But after the 18th it was. Evidence of the deep state exposed!!! Trump didn't create the ELD, however he did not stop it either. I bet he has lost most of his shine in the eyes of the shippers, who have seen the rates go through the roof. And when spring time comes, and the farmers find out that their seed, fertilizer and other input costs have tripled, but the price they will get from the elevators dropped, becuase of all of the mergers likely to happen between the buyers, necessary to offset the increased transportation costs, well Trump may loose some more of his shine in rural America. But he did real back the EPA, and expose the fake news, and the deep state......... Take your victories where you can.

Just to be clear the ELD mandate was part of MAP 21 and it was passed on a bi-partisan vote including a Republican controlled house and signed into law by Obama. A Republican, House, Senate and President have done nothing to overturn it. They have the power to do it and they haven't. If anyone thinks that trucking has a friend in either party they are sadly mistaken.

While the Rumpster may not be paying attention to trucking for the small business owners at this moment in time. He is not to blame for the problems that are in trucking. His predecessor's by and large are to blame.

1. Deregulation (signed by Jimmy Carter)
2. Death of the crooked ICC in 1995
3. Allowing individuals that know little to nothing about trucking to run the FMCSA and be once again influenced by the ATA
4. The broker protection act (signed by Obummer)
5. The ELD mandate (signed by Obummer)
6. Finally the real problem is the lack of business knowledge that Truckers themselves have. While many of us have tried to teach others they contiue to want to blame another for their own failures.

Here it is, quit blaming others for your inability to negotiate in a fair, equitable, and profitable manner.

I’d have to say that not everything Trump has done has been perfect in my eyes but he has been doing a hell of a job for not having the support of congress in the capacity I believe we would otherwise expect. It’s been a break neck pace thus far and I don’t see any signs of letting up. Buckle up I believe it’s going to be one helluva ride. ??????
