Does anyone here haul ethanol? I was wondering if $5 a mile is. Out of line considering the insurance costs and the hazardous paperwork and Reg’s.The rate would be on 200 plus miles shorter than that I’d bid hourly to account for loading and unloading. Not sure if it takes slot of time to load and unload. Does anyone here do this steady to where they keep 6-10 trucks busy year around or is it seasonal which would have to increase the rate also? I would be pursuing this on a contractual basis but would like some idea. I have been trucking since 1990 so not really a newbie but I would be to hazardous.

I think you are a little on the high side. Because it considered more of a fill in and ever one else hauls it for nothing .

Wrong on so many levels!!!




You just dont go and hook up and start hauling it for fill in work. Usually its bid per week,per month, or so many loads(5,10,20,50,100 loads). You just dont call up a broker and get work. Most of it is hauled directly from buyer.

I was not going to bid a broker. I’m past adding equipment unless I get annual contracts to haul. I don’t think it’s honestly worth it to do it for $5 a mile. Maybe a guarantee of 5 trucks with a minimum $700000 revenue. This came up to me in another Trucking deal I’m involved in but I can’t seem to find what others have bid to haul ethanol but maybe most on here just do broker freight. I won’t do it for less than $2.50 on all miles since just regular freight pays that. I’m thinking I’ll bid it 5.25 one way. It’s only a 310 mile haul so there is no time for reloads. Basically a load out and back a day.

How many gallons you plan on hauling per truck load. Even the big players wont guarentee 700k. Usually its bid per gallon. Dont forget about FSC. Your gross dollars is still a very good day. In my opinion. Unlikely they will accept your offer. It will be high in their opinion.

Don't know about what to charge but I have hauled a lot of it here in Michigan as a company driver. It all depends on where you are loading from and delivering to as to how long it takes to load and unload. We haul the super tankers here and we have one place we load at that is one arm load one rack. takes 50 mins to load and that's if no one is in front of you. I have sat 4 + hrs waiting to get loaded. But then there are other places that have 2 arms 2 racks. Takes roughly 25 mins to load. I do know my company charges detention after 2 hrs total waiting time. loading and unloading time combined. hope this helps

I hauled ethanol as a company for one of big carriers in Wi,Mn,Il.Ia. a lot of the ethanol goes into Chicago and there can long wait to unload also.My dispatcher always said they bid the runs to cover the round as you don't get anything else.But that was a few years back when no one wanted to haul it,there are a lot of terminals that take to blend in but those contracts are pretty much covered.My two cents worth after 9 years of hauling petroleum products the best money is in hauling motor oil.
